Biography

Matej Bunderla was born 1985 in Maribor (SLO). He started his musical education at the age of seven, with piano lessons. With eleven he discovered the Saxophone and has been playing ever since. After completing his Gymnasium (2004) he studied Saxophone in the class of Prof. Peter Straub (University of Arts in Graz, Austria). At the same University, in 2007 he finished his bachelor’s degree with distinctions and in 2009 he did his master studies in the class of Mag. Gerald Preinfalk, also with distinction. In 2011, under Ensemble Klangforum (University of Arts in Graz) he finished his second master’s degree in Performance Practice in Contemporary Music (PPCM), where as in 2013, he did another Bachelor study on Instrumental Pedagogy.
Bunderla participated in many master classes under several notable professors, such as
Claude Delangle, Marcus Weiss, Arno Bornkamp, Matjaž Drevenšek, Lars Mlekusch, Miha Rogina.
He has played in several chamber groups (Los Capo Altros, Sinfonietta Graz, Eichamt Orchester) as well as with Orchestras (Oper Graz, KUG,  Toti Big Band Maribor , European Master Orchestra, Naš Big Band, Ensemble für neue Musik). As a musician and performer at Theater Feuerblau. As soloist in Graz (A), he played at the MuMuTh-Brass abonnement (2009) and with the Wind Symphonic Orchestra of the University of Arts Graz. In 2015, with the Chamber Orchestra Diletto Grazioso he played A. Glasunow's Concert for alto saxophone. In May 2016 at the European Union Music festival in Caracas, Venezuela, Bunderla represented Austria, and performed H. Villa-Lobos’ Fantasia for soprano saxophone and chamber orchestra. In October 2017 in the Festival for Electronic Music (EMUfest) in Rome (IT), he performed the composition “Klangrelieff II” by Simone Santi-Gubini as well his own composition “Barythmic”, for Bariton saxophone solo.

Bunderla is member of the Contemporary Music Ensemble Schallfeld, which started its work in 2013 and for 2016-2017 was selected as representative of Austria. He is a member of the Trio MIM Ensemble, playing improvised and new composed music and a member of Trio Me3, playing classical music. He is a member of the Spielraum Ensemble – which combines Music and Theater; and also, a member of the Dance Kompanie Ferrer, where he is participating as a stage musician and actor. Another project in which he is engaged and where he plays the music of his heart is The Bakalito Project.

For many years he worked as a teacher in many of the Music Schools in Graz. His work with children and youth was extended also by being a co-organizer of the Creative Music Week 2012 (Leutschach, Styria), which was supported by the European program Youth in Action. He works in regular basis with composers, where apart from playing their pieces, he also performs as theater musician and improviser. From February 2019 he was employed at the Lower Saxony Police Orchestra and sice January 2020 he is a member of the State Police Orchestra Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
He currently lives in Hamburg.
